![]() “This is really helping to put Dickinsonia as part of the story of animal evolution on planet Earth,” Droser says. But the new work builds on this evidence, using chemistry to support the animal hypothesis. In the past few years, she explains, paleontologists largely reached a consensus that Dickinsonia was an animal, based on studies of its imprints. “I think it sort of completes the puzzle in our understanding of Dickinsonia,” says Mary Droser, a paleontologist at University of California, Riverside, who was not involved in the work. (Lava is magma that has reached the Earth's surface.) Etna also shows off the etymology of igneous, from the Latin word for fire. Igneous rock forms when magma cools and solidifies. Italy's Mount Etna provides a vivid image of one of the birthplaces of igneous rock during a night eruption. “It was an animal.” Though Dickinsonia eventually went extinct, the animal is one of many early experiments in multicellular life that eventually gave rise to our modern menagerie. “This was already actually one of us,” says study author Jochen Brocks, paleobiogeochemist at Australian National University. Their results join mounting evidence that suggests Dickinsonia is among the earliest animal life yet found-predating the Cambrian explosion of life, which took place 541 million years ago and marked the rise of most major animal groups still around today. In a new study, published this week in Science, researchers used modern techniques to take a fresh look at the ancient creatures. In recent decades, the debate has swirled around three groups: some researchers proposed fungi, others said protists, still others say animals. At various points in history, they’ve assigned these curious forms to almost every kingdom of life. However, the question of what exactly Dickinsonia is has long puzzled scientists. This flattened, ribbed oval can grow over four feet across and sports a distinct ridge down its center. One of the most famous of the lot is Dickinsonia. Taking to the warm shallow seas as early as 570 million years ago, these soft and squishy misfits were Earth's earliest complex life. Thanks. The Ediacaran critters were an odd bunch-from ringed discs and patterned blobs to lumpy ropes and wavy fronds. ![]() ![]() If someone else has an alternative to Keep Drive Spinning, that would be great. DISKSOMNIA HOW TOI would probably just need a small script that touched an invisible file on both the drives every now and then to keep them spinning, but I'm not sure how to do that. I had heard of the program Keep Drive Spinning, but apparently, it no longer works for Yosemite. ![]() Obviously this leads to long wait times for accessing files and indexing the system, and I want to keep them from sleeping at all. However, they still spin down after being idle for a while. My issue is that the drives now sleep after some length of time, regardless of the Energy Saver settings, where I have "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" unchecked. Everything works just fine and both drives show up as they used to, so there aren't any problems there. The specific enclosure is this one: īoth the drives I put in it were pulled from individual hard drive enclosures from Seagate that I was using before, but in an effort to clean up wires and have a less cable-y workspace, I consolidated them into one enclosure. ![]() I recently bought a new enclosure to put two Seagate 2TB drives in to. ![]()
